The Tree-Climbing Goats of Morocco’s Argan Trees

In the Souss-Massa region of Morocco, near the Atlas Mountains, a fascinating and unique sight awaits: agile goats scaling trees as tall as 8–9 meters to feast on their fruit.

Yes, you can actually see goats climbing argan trees (*Argania spinosa*), a species native to Morocco and protected by UNESCO. These goats are particularly fond of the sweet fruit produced by the argan tree.

After the goats consume the fruit, they leave behind the seeds, which local residents gather and process into the highly prized and economically valuable argan oil.

Over time, this unusual behavior has become a popular tourist attraction, especially in areas around Essaouira. To attract visitors, goat herders often deliberately place their goats in the trees. Tourists are willing to pay 10–15 Dirham to take photos of this spectacle. However, animal rights activists have raised concerns about this practice, arguing that forcing goats to remain in the trees for hours at a time is a form of animal exploitation.***
